JULY 2012 UPDATE

-- We just closed a terrific, sold-out, extended run of MISS LILLY GETS BONED by Bekah Brunstetter, produced by Studio 42 / Ice Factory Festival.  Pictures coming soon.  In the meantime, you can check out some of our wonderful press at NYTheatre.com, Backstage, Theatre is Easy, David Roberts, Stage & Cinema, and Talk Entertainment.

-- Up next, I will be heading to New Haven for Page 73's Yale Summer Residency, where I will direct a workshop of Dorothy Fortenberry's new play PARTNERS.  The following week, I will be in New Hampshire for the NYTW/Dartmouth Residency, directing a workshop of Jordan Seavey's LISTENING FOR OUR MURDERER.  Very excited about both of these projects.

-- This fall, we will start pre-production on Anna Moench's FREEDOM HOUSE, which will be performed by the third-year class at NYU/Tisch Graduate Acting -- the culmination of a joint-stock process that began with a workshop last spring on dumpster-diving, survivalism, and communal living.  Stay tuned!

-- Finally, on August 27 I will be retuning to one of my favorite places in the city, the Castillo Theatre, to direct a reading of Jackie Roberts' play about Somali immigrants in Maine, dreams heavier than air, as part of the Fratti-Newman Political Playwriting Awards.

Dear friends,

Here's a quick recap of what's been going on since I last wrote.

First, hopefully, you came to this blog through the new, improved davidfchapman.com - an ongoing project, I'm happy it's up. (Feel free to send me any feedback.)

Second, the cover feature I wrote for AMERICAN THEATRE magazine went out to bookstores and subscribers this week.  It looks terrific - the editors and designers at AT did a wonderful job.  Thank you to my many friends and colleagues who agreed to be interviewed.  To those of you who can't get a hard copy, the text of the article is available here.

In December, my production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, AS TOLD BY CHARLES DICKENS (HIMSELF), adapted by Greg Oliver Bodine and performed (solo) by Jimmy Keiffer, played to wonderful audiences of all ages at the Canal Park Playhouse, including sold-out performances at the end of our run.  We received warm reviews in the NYTimes, Show Business Weekly, and elsewhere.

In other news, I have recently signed on as Consulting Artistic Director of the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity, NYC's premiere festival for eco-friendly and socially conscious theatre.  Applications for the 2012 Festivity (to take place this June) are due January 17 -- next week!  See more information at our website, and/or contact me with any questions about Planet Connections at PlanetDavidC [AT] gmail.

Also, I am proud to be directing a reading of Stealin' Home, a play inspired by the Jackie Robinson story, in the Performing Fred Newman festival, a 26-hour tribute marathon of the activist/playwright's canon at one of my favorite places in the city, the Castillo Theatre.  Details can be found here.

The Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab continues this spring -- a wonderful group of people I feel privileged to spend Sunday evenings with.  Stay tuned for details on the reading of Jackie Sibblies Drury's new play, which I will direct in May.

Finally, we are getting ready for another season of Core Company up at the Orchard Project in the Catskills.  Applications for our incredible apprentice program will be available soon.  If you are interested in a residency up at the OP, apply here by January 31.  Questions about Core Company can be directed to David [AT] exchangenyc [DOT] org.

Best wishes to all for 2012!
David
